Assignment 7

Think about an experience in which you learned something that was initially difficult. To what extent do Vygotsky's concepts (guidance, motivation, apprenticeship, zone of proximal development) explain the experience? Write a step by step description of your learning process (using theory to explain when relevant).

When I was younger, learning how to spell was a challenge. I remember dreading my weekly spelling tests. In order to help me with this, my authoritative parents (of whom I am very thankful) helped me by writing out the words and pronouncing the sounds as they wrote each letter. As I watched this I learned by guided participation, because I incorporated the information by watching others (my parents). As they were teaching me their methods they were the educator, and I was their apprentice in thinking, to use Vygotskys terms, because they were stimulating and directing my cognition. My parents also were aware of my zone of proximal development, although I know for a fact that they did not know the exact term for it. They knew the tasks that were just outside of my ability to perform myself so after reviewing what I could perform myself we looked onto future possible vocabulary words. They would then teach me certain sounds letters can make for example the “sh” or “ch” or “ing” sound. Soon enough I could spell these words that I previously could not, and then we moved onto more difficult words, and the process repeated itself, so I was always exposed to new material in addition to reviewing what I have already learned. This is just one reason why I have my parents to thank for my healthy development.
