Research Project
I would like to do a study on children that are “spanked” for punishment and those who are not. My hypothesis would be that they would experience more built up anger and later in life repeat the same actions. I would use a longitudinal study on groups of early childhood ages 2-4. I would then follow them up until high school age documenting their behavior. The independent variable for this study would be the children that were spanked. The dependent variable would be the attitudes and behavior. I would also have a group of children that were my control group from families that didn’t spank.
Research Project
My Project would observe the correlation between people who own pets and living happier lives. I hypothesize that there will be a strong positive correlation between people owning pets and living happier than people who live without pets. This type of research would be conducted using a Longitudinal Study because I would have to follow two groups of individuals for the greater period of their lives. There would be two groups of twenty people per group. Choosing people who are impartial to whether or not they go through life with or without a pet would cover the study group aspect of the project and I would contact each individual of each group every six months for the first 2 years and then annually for the remaining years of the study. Providing each of the members of one group with a pet and the other members of the second group with no pet would be the Independent Variable. If and/or when their pet died as part of the study I would provide them with a new pet until the study was completed. The Dependent Variable would be the results found at the conclusion of the project most likely at age 55 or 60.

There currently are some that claim that through science, specifically genetic enhancement or genetic therapy, we can not only increase the longevity and reduce the chances of disease, but create the next Lebron James, Michael Phelps or Brad Pitt. Beyond the basic ethical questions and controversy surrounding this type of genetic altering, I look to prove that genetic enhancement can predetermine many traits of an offspring through a case study. The independent variable for this study would be specific genes that are target for alteration. The dependent variable would be the traits of the study offspring that are associated with the genes that were altered.
Interest of Study
I am interested in studying children who participate in sports and those who do not and how will their lives be effected my this. My hypothesis is that students who do participate within sports learn to be more outgoing and also learn discipline. I think that if children get involved in sports they will learn how to be apart of a team and learn how to make friends. This will also help them later on in life with working with co-workers at their jobs, and how to get along with others. Sports can also teach discipline to children by keeping them active and if they do something that was not nice they will learn that there will be a price to pay and that is not being able to play in that sport. As for the students who do not play a sport, their lives might be different. They will make friends but will they learn how to work as team. My research method that I would use would be the longitudinal study where I would study a group of five year old and follow them up through high school. It will be interesting to see how each student acts.
research project
While working on an assignment for my Methods of Reading class, I noticed that children seemed to lose interest in reading around the same time that the style of teaching changed. I am not saying that the teaching style caused the dislike, but I think there is a strong correlation between the two. My project would be a longitudinal, and would follow a group of students during first grade through high school. There would be a control group who would be taught the same exact way other students are currently taught to read, and an experimental group who would be taught the old fashioned way. Hopefully this would show what the correlation between the two teaching styles and interest in reading is.
my study
I would like to conduct a study on adopted children. In this study I would like to look at differences between children from an adopted family and children from their biological family. It would be interesting for me to see if there were any differences or issues from the child that was adopted rather than from their biological family. My hypothesis in the study is that there could be more issues with adopted child than the non adopted child. I think a child from an adopted family would have more issues with trust and possibly identity. I think a child from an adopted family would have issues with their identity later in life because they may not know who their biological parents are or were and where they came from. I would also like to study the parenting styles of the adopted parents and the biological parents. In this study the independent variable would be the parents and their parenting styles. The dependent variable would be the children. In this study I would survey the parents and do longitudinal research on the children.
I would like to do a study on students who play sports and students who don't and the grade difference
I would like to study students in high school to see if there is a difference in grades between student's who play sports, and those that do not play sports. My hypothesis is that students that play sports might have better grades then those who don't. The only reason I think this though is because when you play a sport you have to have certain grades to play and also might have study halls that are mandatory, but I could be completely wrong with this and there might not even be a difference in the grades. I would use a longitudinal study, and try and find students in each class that play sports and don't and study them through out their high school years. You would need to check on the students grades before and after a season. Look at both groups and see what their grades look like.
Research design
I would like to study the effects of performance in school from students who came from a divorced family. My hypothesis would be that students who do come from divorced families do not perform as well as those students who come from families where both the parents are still married to each other. I would use a longitudinal study. I would study a group of 5 year olds who come from divorced families over there elementary, middle, and high school years. I would also have a control group of students who do not come from divorced families. The independent variable for this study would be students coming from families where the parents are divorced. The dependent variable would be the students grades.
my experiment
I would like to conduct a study on children and media violence. My hypothsis would be that children are not directly influenced by violence in the media, but the way that they parents raise their children. This is a very controversial subject right now in our society. I believe that it is not the media who influences the children but its how the parents relay the message to the children. The parents should clearly inform their children the difference between acceptable behavior and and unexceptable behavior. I would use media violence as the independant veriable. and parental control as the dependant veriable. I would use surveys for the parents and a longitudinal study for the children.
I am interested in seeing the effects of parental childing raising on young girls with eating disorders. My hypothesis would be that young girls raised in an authoritarian setting are more likely to develop an eating disorder than other girls who are not. The independent variable is the parenting style and the dependent variable is if the young girls develop or have an eating disorder. This would most likely be done in a survey, or a longitudinal experiment.
I would like to conduct a study on young girls who were born to a young mother (15-19) and their liklihood to follow in their mother's footsteps. I believe that their is a negative correlation between the age of a mother when they bore their child and the child's liklihood of becoming sexually active at a young age. For this experiment, I would need to set up a longitudinal study. I would select young girls in the age groups of 11, 13, and 15 who were born to a young mother. The subjects would need to be followed-up on twice a year for ten years in order to determine a relative time at which they became sexually active. This, of course, will require the subjects to be completely honest and open about their sex life. A control group of young girls born to parents at a more mature age will also be tracked twice a year. This will help to determine whether or not all girls are likely to become sexually active at an earlier age, or if having been born to a young mother correlates with earlier sexual activity in young girls. The independent variables involved in this experiment will include: having been born to a young mother, age, culture/ethnic background, and socioeconomic status. The dependent variable will be the age at which the young girl becomes sexually active.

assignment 1
I have noticed that ADHD seems to be overdiagnosed recently. I have also noticed that many children that are diagnosed with ADHD have chaotic and disrupted home lives. I think that it would be interesting to do a study on children diagnosed with ADHD. They would be within the same age ranges and the study would be conducted by surveying several children diagnosed with ADHD to determine the number of children diagnosed with ADHD that have had rough childhoods. The numbers of ADHD children with stable home lives and those with chaotic home lives would be totaled and the numbers would be compared to determine in which group the majority falls in. My hypothesis is that a large number of the ADHD kids would fall into the category of disrupted home lives.
As a NICU nurse I work with severely premature babies on a regular biases and in my short two year career I have seen many advancements in the technology used to treat micropremature babies. Babies who just a few years ago would have not survived are surviving in recorded numbers.
My questions is, how will being born so prematurely effect a child’s growth and development? I hypothesize that being born extremely premature will have a negative effect on growth and development. The study will be done longitudinally, it will follow a group of 600 children, 300 children born 25 weeks gestational age or younger and 300 children born 38 weeks gestational age and older. The study will take place over an 18 year period. The independent variable is the difference in gestational age, while the dependent variable or control will be that all 600 children will be from the same cohort, the number of male and female participants will be equal and they will all come from the same SES. Growth and development will be measured by biannual tests appropriate for each stage of development. Then, the data will be analyzed and findings will be made available.

I am interested in the correlation between reading often at a young age and intelligence. My research question is: Does reading regularly at a young age contribute to the intelligence of a child? My hypothesis would be that children who do read more often will have higher IQ scores than children who do not.
The research would be conducted through a longitudinal study of children from the ages of five through ten. There would be an experimental group and a control group. The experimental group would read for half an hour every day while the control group would not. IQ tests would be administered to both groups at the age of five and again at the age of ten in order to measure whether or not the children who read half an hour a day experienced an increase in intelligence over the children who did not read every day.
The independent variable is the half an hour of reading each day. The dependent variable is intelligence.

i believe that there is a negative correlation between the age of children when there parents divorce and the likelyhood that the child will divorce. in other words, the younger a child is when their parents divorce the greater the chance for their own divorce in the future and visa versa.
to conduct such an experiment it would need a longitudinal study of children 5, 10, and 15 with parents recently divorced. the subjects would need to be followed every 5 years to track relationship, marriage and possibly divorce status. there should also be a control group involved for each of the experiment groups; this will ensure that the data collected is prevalent to divorce rates or just a shift in culture.
the variables involved include: socioeconomic status, number of children in the original family, culture, age, and sex.
the idea is to measure the strength of marriage/divorce in the children exposed to divorce at a young age.

It has always been of interest to me the interaction between gifted and talented students with the mainstream student, due to the fact that i attend to have a minor to teach these specific children. Therefore, my research question is, "How does the age of a child placed in a gifted and talented program effect their interaction with mainstream students?" My hypothesis is that as children age, the interaction between mainstream and GT students will increase. The study will be done longitudinally(since it is the best method to observe age and child development), and will follow 10 gifted and talented children over a span of ten years.Year-to-year observation will begin (in the classroom) when children are eight years of age, and conclude when the have reached age eighteen, or their senior year of high school. The independent variable will be the difference in years from ages eight to eighteen, while the dependent variable will be that all ten gifted and talented students come from the same SES, and the gender ratio be equal in observation, with five male participants and five female participants. Interaction will be measured by yearly observations of the GT students, and data will be written accordingly.
